Purefoods & Ginebra, Tied as most popular teams in PBA?

Sometimes I don’t believe polls anymore. (Check out the poll now at the right column, Homer Se is the most valuable player out there. :-) )
SWS survey says that the Purefoods Giants and the Barangay Ginebra Kings are the most popular teams in the Philippine Basketball Association. Tied.
Ok then, tell that to the Araneta and PBA accountants and they’ll give you the book that says, gate receipts for Ginebra games are over the top. A pol sci grad will argue the science of survey, but to me, 1ooo respondents can’t cover the masses.
That’s why I don’t trust surveys that much. I don’t quite believe an answer by one dude, having siesta then SWS agent knocks on the door, rings the bell and asks some questions too.
SWS agent asks, “Which are your favorite PBA teams, if any?” Dude still sleepy, remembers the juicy hotdog he took at lunch time, he answers, PUREFOODS!
We happen to be at the Araneta Center for the first game of the Ginebra - Air21 Finals. We came there early and all the good seats were taken. We ended with seats having our hair touching the Araneta Center ceiling. We’re this far. Now that’s the real answer to the question, “Which team is the most popular?”
Not to put down Purefoods, Magnolia, et al, but even their own fans will admit, Ginebra by far, has more, err, most. This finals alone against Air 21, Ginebra fans are at it. Even good guy Bo Perasol is getting boo birds. Cmon guys, spare Bo the Boo! Arwind Santos, initially said, Gins booing is just challenging him to do better. But after the awarding ceremonies, he felt the heat of Ginebra fans boo and he had something to say about the boos. To the effect, he says boos during awarding is uncalled for. Tell that to the Philly fans who booed Kobe back in the day.
From www.sws.org.ph… Purefoods and Ginebra, sister teams belonging to conglomerate San Miguel Corp., “were cited by an equal 31 percent of adult Filipinos,” the SWS said on its website (www.sws.org.ph). “Ginebra is most popular team in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon (areas outside Metro Manila in Luzon), while Purefoods is most popular team in the Visayas and Mindanao,” SWS said. Following them were Magnolia Beverage Masters (21%), Alaska Aces (13%), Sta. Lucia Realtors (5%), Red Bull Barako (4%), Talk N’ Text Phone Pals (3%), Coca-Cola Tigers (1%), and Air21 Express (1%). Also mentioned, Ginebra is more popular among men, while Purefoods is more popular among women. To this I agree, since eternity Purefoods’ fan base is women. Thanks to the short shorts of Alvin, Jerry and Jolas back in ‘88. Now, James Yap carries the torch for Purefoods.
Timing too of the survey plays a crucial factor in the poll results. This PBA survey was conducted March of 2008. Then, Purefoods Hotdogs were fresh from finals stint for Philippine Cup. So, people kinda still remember the finals appearance. Gins had a forgettable Philippine Cup. Then again, Sta. Lucia Realtors who took the Philippine Cup crown, only placed 5th in the pop survey.
Anyway, I have no problemo with this survey, just saying that surveys are just that, surveys. If it favors you, you’ll agree and if not, you’ll look for answer elsewhere. Some of the real answers can be had in other form or ways like checking the TV ratings, checking the gate attendance, which jerseys sells, is Sonny Barrios smiling a lot these days or not, etcetera.
Danding too has no problem with Purefoods and Ginebra sharing the pop honors.

its very simple they don’t need to hire these inconsistent SWS people, just simply check the ratings and ask for the ticket sales volume everytime Ginebra plays versus Poorfoods game.

Who gives a flying fkuc about the SWS survey? Go to Araneta during a Championship game with Purefoods in it and a regular season game with Ginebra in it and you’ll see the difference.

totoo yang survey…. dito sa amin sa mindanao, eh hindi naman talaga sikat ang ginebra….. purefoods is really more sikat than ginebra. but i must admit na sa metro manila eh mas sikat ang ginebra…. i dont know about the author of this article pero na explain naman ng survey na sa mtro manila e mas popular ang ginebra… kaya nga sa gate attendance ng pba e klarong klaro na mas marami talaga nanunuod sa ginebra…….. parang uaap din yan sikat sa manila pero saprovinces eh hindi….. sana maliwanagan ang author na wag siyang mg damdam kung pareho ang purefoods at ginebra.. ok kumain nga ng hotdog ang ini interview pero ok na yu n kaysa naman nalasing siya diba pagkatapos uminom ng gin?????? thank you
the column in the right about homer se cannot be compared to the survey done by the SWS diba? i mean scientific approach ung sa sws while sa internet eh pwede kang bumoto kahit ilan… xempre pinagkatuwaan lang si homer se…. eh bakit ba naman nilagay pa ang name ni homer se jan….

tsaka ung game 7 ng phili cup finals had an 18taw plus attendance… so hindi rin naman biro ang fan base ng purefoods…… ngayun ngang finals so far eh 16taw palang ang nanunuod sa araneta eh, siguro dadami yan sa game 6 at game 7 if necesary ecllipsing phil cup finals attendance.. pero it just shows that the survey is right…..
i remember na ang pinaka highest rating na nakuha ng pba so sa abc or tv 5 was the regular game between purefoods and ginebra……. so it just showed that the two teams are the most popular……….
so we better pray that a phil cup finals between ginbra and purefoods will happen to break all the records…. its lyk manny pacquiao vs de la hoya
about homer se, cmon now he is valuable, check his numbers last night, its better than kobe across the board. he maybe more valuable than kobe now. or maybe right, napagkatuwaan lang. i am sure joke lng naman yan homer se in there at the polls.
ok then, puefoods and gins next year philippines cup. then lets set the venue there over at davao or cagayan de oro or bacolod city or escalante and lets hear the roar and lets gauge the fans. wag pala sa escalante, james from there.
i like purefoods. purefoods is my top 3 team in the pba. gnebra 95%, air21 3% and purefoods 2%. the rest i hate.

For your info, pinalitan nga ang pangalan ng GINEBRA noon, pero the same din ang produkto… ALAK pa rin, so natural, ang ginebra fans, magstick pa rin sa Gordons, Gilbey’s, Anejo, Ginebra etc… common sense di ba? Kaya nga kapag naging Dragon Katol ang Ginebra, dyan masusubukan ang loyalty ng Ginebra fans… kasi iba na ang produkto, iba na rin ang isisigaw nila, baka ayaw na nilang sumigaw ng DRA-GON KATOL, DRA-GON KATOL!!! How much more kung bilhin ng Chocknut ang Ginebra(which is impossible syempre, kasi mayaman ang Cojuangco)…
AND for your info, umalis si JAWO sa Ginebra, pero never siya lumipat ng any team, it means sa Ginebra siya nagretire… And so far, sa lahat ng Superstars ng Ginebra magmula noon, si Marlou lang ata ang sikat na na-trade, and hindi sila lugi dahil si Limpot naman ang kapalit… so marami pa rin ang nagstick sa Ginebra… So what if Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand was traded or even ipinamigay bigla ng Ginebra halimbawa sa Sta. Lucia, for Butel and Mamaclay(which is impossible pa rin)? Tiyak marami ang lalamya… Kelan ba naman kasi naubusan ng superstars ang Ginebra? kada henerasyon, meron lagi pumapalit… So ganun ka-blessed ang Ginebra team, kaya kahit anong partida pa ang sabihin ng Gin fans, malakas pa rin ang Ginebra, dahil ugali na nila ang magpalakas… at never silang nagpahina(how i wish ganito din kayayaman ang ibang teams, except SMB and TNT) anong season ba naging mahina ang team nila? maaari nung bandang year 2000 and 2003 kung saan na-eeliminate agad sila, pero hello, ang lakas pa rin ng line up nila nun…
Kaya dapat lang na never say die ang Ginebra kasi lagi silang may players na mahuhugot… last conference, kung tutuusin, nagmukha lang mahina ang Ginebra kasi injured ang bandana boys/mr.fast and mr.furrious, pero nagbalik si Tubid that time, at ang lakas ng import nila, even Artadi e malakas na, at JONG Uichico pa ang coach, and one thing more, bagito ang air21 sa championship… kaya di masasabing dehado Ginebra last conference… na-overlook lang ng tao na hey, we still have Tubid, Salvacion, Crisano, Artadi, Alexander, Mamaril and MENK…
So i really salute Ginebra’s supremacy!!! hindi me anti-Ginebra, pero syempre, may times na naiinis me sa ibang Ginebra fans na alam niyo na, balahura kung mang-asar or magdahilan… And, natural, anti-ginebra ako kapag Air21/Burger King ang kalaban…For your info, pinipilit kong gayahin ang stroke ni MC, panoorin niyo kung paano BUMITAW SI CAGUIOA, in fairness, nagimprove ang shooting ko, hehe… medyo upper left ng head niya kinikuha yung bwelo sa pag-shoot… astig ang bitaw niya…
