NBA’s TRANSPORTACTION

TRANSPORTACTION

JAILBREAK: Josh Childress took his game to Greece. Childress signed a contract worth 20 million US dollars by Olympiakos to move far away from the United States. This signing was said to be the highest in Euroleague history. He was the sixth pick overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2004 Draft. Last season he was the team’s top reserve averaging close to 12 points and 5 boards a game and normed 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in his four-year career. Yeah, we’ve seen Euroleague get raided by NBA scouts so this could mean good, right? By the way, Childress wasn’t the only Hawk the Greek team lured in their nest. Remember that dunker named Dominique Wilkins?

UNDER SCRUTINY: Weeks past the opening of the free agent market and we have seen a lot of names moving away to enemy territory. Here are some of the defectors. Read more

Ginebra’s Sweep Life

July 28, 2008 by .:. · 23 Comments

Whooo! Finally, the Barangay Ginebra put an end to a tough series against old nemesis Redbull Barako via 4-game sweep. Such feat was last accomplished by the Tony Harris-led Swift Mighty Meaty against 7-Up.

The Ginkings, considered as the people’s team started the import- laced conference with a dismal 0-5 win-loss card. But the ka-baranggays, knowing their undying faith never lost their hope(me included) continued to cheer and pray that a messiah would come along their way. Read more

Sydman’s Side Defect: PBA MVP08 - SG/SF Part 2

July 16, 2008 by SYDMAN · Leave a Comment

This is the second part of the SG/SF series. By this time you have your bets on making your choice but are you really sure they played more than enough to clinch the citation?

Game starts now.

JAMES YAP: Forget the kick that shocked the nation. Forget the marital quarrel that ignited the nation. But most of all, forget a MVP repeat… because it will never happen this season. Sure Yap fans would get pissed but Purefoods made the Finals once and didn’t win the championship. Stat-wise, Yap is behind teammate Kerby Raymundo (Kerby has high rebounds and assists compared to Yap). And also, Purefoods failed to make it past the Wildcard. While he is still in the running for the Mythical Team, the Philippine Cup leading scorer won’t get the MVP nod. Read more

Gilbert Arenas On His Manila Visit

No event-pass or a simple invite given by Adidas to cover Gilbert Arenas so Agent Zero got zero HooPh coverage. But hey, from Arenas’ own words, seems his visit is a success. And his trip didn’t need that much buzz from us, as from his entry and the linked pictures, crowd’s mad. Read more

Sydman’s Side Defect: PBA MVP08 - SG/SF Part 1

SLASHERS 1-4 of 8

Off guards and shooting guards play similarly, that’s why it’s hard to distinguish which is what. I’m basing the first eight players from their height. I could be wrong on how this turns out but among the players that slash and shoot, here are the biggest names.

MARK CAGUIOA: Whenever the Spark sees action, expect him a downpour of shots. Basing his numbers, he’ll likely claim the Mythical Team… until you see his games. It would be unfair for others if he gets a spot when he just played less than 75 percent of his team’s games. This could work though if he lifts Ginebra to the Finals. The Fiesta Cup has been sweet for Mr. Furious, especially since he was once the scoring leader despite the fact that this is an import laden conference.

PHILCUP STATS: 16.5ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.6apg , 0.8spg (11 games)
FIESCUP STATS: 23.1ppg, 4.6rpg, 2.6apg, 0.9spg (16 games as of July 15)

MAC CARDONA: After a great 2007 Fiesta Cup where he became the conference’s best player, Cardona had to endure the fact that he’ll play second fiddle to Renren Ritualo. During Derrick Pumaren’s reign, Cardona shared equal minutes with the Rain Man. That changed with Chot Reyes at the helm. Cardona became a focal point in scoring. However, just like Alapag, Talk N Text had two conferences that ended before the quarterfinal series. Those finishes don’t look good for Captain Hook’s chances. Read more

Sydman’s Side Defect: PBA MVP08 - The Point Guards

July 15, 2008 by SYDMAN · 4 Comments

One month. I’ll just give you one month before the preseason starts. Sure there will be predictions on who will be the league’s MVP but here’s a clear breakdown on what we could spot.

Game Starts Now!

THE POINT GUARDS

Honestly there are four guards that should battle for the Mythical Team spot but amongst these quarterbacks, none of them will win the MVP award.

A crack to the first team could do wonders though.

JIMMY ALAPAG: Here’s a guy that started slow in both conferences. While he picked up his game in the final two games of Talk N Text, the Phone Pals failed to break out of the Wildcard Phase, which means a Mythical Team citation could be in jeopardy. However, his numbers could at least make him a candidate to grace the Second Team but to a very slim extent. Read more
