David Stern: Where Epic Inconsistency Happens

April 30, 2008 by Chrisangelo · 1 Comment

For about a year now, I’ve been doing my best Mark Cuban impersonation by whining a lot about how David Stern and the gang does things in the NBA. And after a year of whining, things just got worse.

After a heated altercation between Kevin Garnett and Zacha “I won’t back down from you KG” Pachulia last night in Atlanta, you will see three “suspension worthy” things that’s worth discussing. Since I still can’t post Youtube videos here (Mark! Help!) I’ll just gladly post the link.. watch it here.

Pause the video at 0:18. You will see that Kevin Garnett clearly shoved the referee who was trying to separate him from Pachulia. Now I really don’t know about what you guys think, but the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that is two freakin’ words…. ZERO TOLERANCE. Read more

Fil-Am Erik Spoelstra, new Miami Heat Head Coach

37-year old Erik Spoelstra is making history with the Miami Heat. Not only is he the first Filipino to become a head coach of an NBA team, he is also the youngest head coach in NBA history. Erik Spoelstra is the son of former NBA executive Jon Spoelstra and Filipina Fe Celino. He says he is of Dutch-Irish-Filipino descent. In an interview last year in Filipinas Magazine, Spoelstra said, “There is one thing that I am definitely interested in doing in the future, and that is helping develop basketball in the Philippines.

Will KJ Do A MP?

Opinionated members of the sports glitterati are not content merely endorsing political campaigns. They’d rather join the wild and wooly world of politics themselves. The latest world sports celebrity to test the waters is ex-NBA star Kevin Johnson. Will he end up like Pacquiao, who lost face and oodles of money in a failed attempt to win a congressional seat in South Cotabato? It will be up to the voters of this state capital come June 3. The Playoff 10 (1st round, first 4 games)

April 29, 2008 by Chrisangelo · Leave a Comment

Howdy hoop maniacs! Welcome to another edition of the Playoff 10. Today, we feature ten of the best performers after playing their fourth (fifth for the Magic) respective game in the first round. This time, two players from two teams who have closed out their series topped the rankings, as our former number 1 spot holder Chris Paul falls some places back. A new comer enters the list today as he led his team to back to back wins against their opponent.
Almost but for some reasons… not quite (Not arranged)

Josh Smith (Atlanta Hawks, 2-2 vs the Celtics) 18.5 PPG, 7 RPG, 3.8 BPG

Amare Stoudamire (Phoenix Suns, 1-3 vs the Spurs) 25 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.2 BPG

Kevin Garnett (Boston Celtics, 2-2 vs the Hawks) 21.8 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 2.8 SPG

David West (New Orleans Hornets, 3-1 vs the Mavs) 22 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.3 APG

Tracy McGrady (Houston Rockets, 1-3 vs the Jazz) 23.3 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 7.8 APG
Now the best 10..

10) Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks, 1-3 vs the Hornets) 28 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 3.5 APG

Well what can you say… he has done his part as the team leader and a former MVP for the Mavericks. All he has to do is wait for the others to do theirs.

9) Pau Gasol (Los Angeles Lakers, Won the Series against the Nuggets 4-0) 22.3 PPG, 9 RPG, 5 APG

Pau has been a consistent number 2 option for the Lakers as they swept the Enver Nuggets in four games.

8) Joe Johnson (Atlanta Hawks, 2-2 vs the Celtics) 22 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 5 APG

The king Hawk proved that they’re no pushovers as he led his team to a second consecutive victory with a 35 point performance against a 66 win team at home.

7) Deron Williams (Utah Jazz, 3-1 vs the Rockets) 21 PPG, 9 APG, 1.8 RPG

Steady and reliable. That’s what Deron Williams is to the Jazz.

6) Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs, 3-1 vs the Suns) 23.8 PPG, 13 RPG, 3.3 APG

Tim’s numbers went into a little bit of a downward spiral after having a stellar 40 point performance in game 1, but that doesn’t say anything about what he’s done for the Spurs in their series against Phoenix… Read more

Lakers - Celtics Finals? Not So Fast, Atlanta’s So Furious

April 29, 2008 by Benhur · 4 Comments

I was asked, are we really in for a sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet Boston Celtics - Los Angeles Lakers NBA finals. My answer… Boston can easily be out East but San Antonio is one hell of a team to crack. Lakers (if ever they can get out of Utah alive) will have one tough time against Tim, Tony and Manu.

But after today’s games, look who’s having trouble. Certainly not Lakers. Boston is now 2-2 against the Atlanta Hawks (Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Horford + Great Crowd Support + Good Coaching = Trouble In Boston) and the Lakers did a demolition job and kicked out a 50 win team with capital E.A.S.E. Playoffs Losers and Performers, Who Are They?

April 29, 2008 by Benhur · 3 Comments

The NBA 2008 Playoffs hasn’t really been better than the 2007 version. What with 2 teams already inside the 2nd round (Lakers and Hawks) and the marquee match up of Spurs and Suns is flop (pun intended, Shaq!). All other West’s series are 3-1 now. The East highly anticipated Cavs and Wizards isn’t close either. Boston and Detroit struggling with lower seeded teams is not good for NBA too as they want to project the “eliteness” of the Pistons and Celtics.

If the 2007 Playoffs was defined by close games, as early as now, the 2008 Playoffs is defining the prototype Losers and Winners of the NBA Playoffs.

Certified career losers thru 2008 playoffs… (1) Tracy McGrady needs to win 3 times in row, I repeat, 3 in a row, against UTAH to prevent his signature first round playoff exit from happening. Is he injured? Not. Is he old? Not. He registered 12 points fourth quarter points in 4 games. Comparing, Kobe had 15 points in the final 5.5 minutes of his Denver close out game. (Note, too much Kobe praises, where’s Kobe butt? This contributor needs to kiss it quick.) (2) This is Carmelo Anthony’s 5th straight playoff butt-kicking. Tracy’s dubious record is in trouble. ‘Nuff said. (3) Kevin Garnett’s Boston Celtics. In 12 seasons, only 1 time that he got out of the first round. Whoooooosh. See my next post. (4) Grant Hill. Oh well, this guy went though a lot of injuries (including the the 90’s playoff series versus Atlanta, he’s playing injured there/then) so let’s take Hill off this list. Yes, Grant Hill is not listed here. (5) Yao Ming, 6 years and counting and we are still waiting for his greatness. Oh forget greatness, at the VERY LEAST, a 2nd round playoff stint. But wait, he’s injured too and he’s Asian. Let’s take him out of this too. Yes, Yao is not listed here. Read more

Zero tolerance my behind! Fine this “Kidd” and suspend his a#! to oblivion! + Playoff Photo of the day number 5

April 28, 2008 by Chrisangelo · 2 Comments

Read the title. Obviously, I’m not pleased with what Jason Kidd did earlier today in their possibly last home game against the Hornets. Pulling an Artest on a play that should’ve been a let-go with your team down by 16 in the last quarter is not only pointless, it’s down right stupid. And this also goes out to everybody who’s saying it should’ve only been a flagrant one because if you would have the time to watch the video again, you would clearly see that after Jason missed his attempt to swipe the ball, he went for Pargo’s head and slammed it down like what wrestlers do in the turnbuckle. For Christ’s sakes, he could’ve killed Pargo, thank God Jannero has some cat-like reflexes to avoid further damage. Watch the video and slow-mo replay again here

Clearly, Jason Kidd was frustrated. They were getting blown out at home, he’s doing nothing right, his teammates were scared to take shots and he’s getting tooled by a Playoff rookie in Chris Paul. Now the question is, what happens now? So he got his arse ejected, so fricking what? Do you guys actually think that an ejection would be enough punishment to justify what Kidd did to Pargo? Where’s the so called “Zero Tolerance” rule when you need it? Last year, Amare and Diaw got suspended for one game because they stood up for a teammate and that suspension most probably cost the Suns an NBA Championship. Read more

SINGAPORE’S MOST SOUGHT AFTER

SINGAPORE’S MOST SOUGHT AFTER

We always see his name posted amongst the various links pointing out to the American Idol finalist (the two Davids will eventually own him) however, we are not clinging on this and instead we check out how one Filipino made it to the Yahoo reel.

Jason Castro, currently a member of the Harbour Centre Port Masters is courted by the Singapore Slingers to join their team. The 6-foot ex-PCU Dolphin reportedly impressed the Slingers and they are willing to haggle to get the services of Castro.

Castro, a 2-time PBL MVP, gave the Slingers goosebumps in his excellent style of play and the abundance of Filipinos in Singapore could trigger an influx of fans for the hapless Slingers.

The Singapore Slingers isn’t your ordinary Southeast Asian team in some second-rate organization, pitiful to be named alongside the PBA in one sentence. The Slingers are part of the National Basketball League, the Australian-based hoop-dom where we first saw legendary Aussies like the legendary Andrew Gaze, Shane Heal, Chris Anstey, Andrew Bogut, and PBA imports like Sean Lampley, Rosell Ellis, Leon Trimmingham, and Galen Young play. Once called the Canberra Cannons and the Hunter Pirates, The Slingers’ CEO Bob Turner thought it was a good idea for the NBL to expand in other territories. They had earlier expanded to New Zealand and Singapore could be the other major step to have an Asia-Oceanic basketball federation. Read more

PBA’s Sick Slam Dunk Contest

April 26, 2008 by Benhur · 8 Comments

I hope Kelly realizes this now, despite winning the PBA 2008 Slam Dunk Championship, he is not made for slam dunk competition. He’s not supposed to get us pumped to see the so-called Kelly-KG slam off next year. He is more of in-game dunker. You know, the Amare Stoudemire, the Nelson Asaytono, the Shawn Kemp dunker types.

It’s obvious, he’s got few tricks in the bag. His slam repertoire aint deep. To cut it short, his best dunk is the between-the-legs stuff. This trick is old. How old? Eleven years old and counting. It;s the Kobe 97 slam dunk clincher. Also, you know its old because that between the legs dunk has had some variations over the years via Mason, Richardson, Carter, etc. So that’s it. That’s the dunk of the night. Impressed? Me not. Read more

Playoff Photos of the Game 3

April 24, 2008 by Chrisangelo · 4 Comments

Some background on the Photos: Apparently, Kenyon Martin and JR Smith haven’t learned anything from DeShawn Stevenson’s stupidity.

After watching DeShawn awake a sleeping giant in LeBron James by trash talking him, JR and K-Mart tried to pull off the same damn trick on KB24.. well, you know what happened… 49 points (on 18/27 shooting) 10 assists and lots of these…
