THE ROOKIE RANKINGS (October)

October 31, 2006 by SYDMAN · 7 Comments

Who’s hot, who’s not. Check the Top 5 and examine the person on the radar.

1. KELLY WILLIAMS

Blame this guy for Sta. Lucia’s insane run. His entry to the club made Marlou Aquino, Kenneth Duremdes, and Dennis Espino realize that they are now expendable. He has an explosive points game and an impressive defensive savvy.

2. ARWIND SANTOS

With KG Canaleta reeling from injuries, Santos quickly became one of the Express’ major guns during crunch time. Carrying a pretty weird number (29), he almost matched his jersey twice when he unlocked 24 and 23 points respectively against Ginebra and SMB. Read more

Top 20 PBA Greatest Monickers Of All Time

October 30, 2006 by Benhur · 53 Comments

Prologue: Monicker can also be spelled “moniker”(bonus knowledge right there). Only Robert Jaworski’s monickers made the list twice. There are only two tandem’s monickers (read on, you’ll get what I mean) in my list. One monicker was shared by two great players (Thanks be to Mr. Eala). Without further ado, the Top 20 Greatest Monickers list below.

1.The Big J - Robert Jaworski

At 6 feet tall (or short, if you are cynical), he aint that big but this monicker fits him. Derived perhaps from his bigger than life persona. Or more likely, because of his large mitts. As he also cared (still cares) for his fans, it can also apply to Big J’s big heart. Thus, this tops my list. Later derived… The Barreling Big J.

2. The Living Legend - Robert Jaworski

Coined in mid-80s when he took over the Ginebra reign, he was or still is, the unequaled Living Legend of Philippine Basketball. Letdown: After he retired (did he?), can you still say “living”?

3. Skywalker - Samboy Lim

Next to Jaworski, Avelino “Samboy” Lim was the only player that can truly electrify the court and the fans. Why? Because of the aerial voyages (sorry Vergel) he made. Thus he was called “The Skywalker”! The “Samboy” nick alone was uber-cool on its own but putting the tag, SKYWALKER was something huh? Letdown: I believe one NBA player was labeled the “Skywalker” earlier than him. But what the heck, I like it anyway. Letdown # 2: He was injured so much throughout his career, people should have devised a back-up monicker, like perhaps, “LandRover” or “Caned-Walker” Read more

Spotlight: Mark Macapagal is a Supersub

October 30, 2006 by SYDMAN · 107 Comments

Starting out as the chief reliever for Mark Caguioa, Mark Macapagal in his last three games is averaging 19.7 points per game.

No one actually thought Macapagal will unlock his skills or even play in the PBA.

Well, a series of questionable judgments rose.

Part of the dominating Romel Adducul led-San Sebastian Stags (then rookie) in the late 90’s, Macapagal was poised to earn the star status because of his gung-ho style of playing. Alongside Christian Coronel and Jam Alfad, they tried to continue the Stags’ winning ways (although they never got a championship). He played for the John-O Juzz and Montana Jewels (among others) in the PBL and as early as 2003, he was already eligible for the PBA Draft.

He never applied though. Read more

Sports’S Top 10 Cheaters

October 30, 2006 by blirio · Leave a Comment

10. MICHAEL SCHUMACHER
9. ROSIE RUIZ
8. MONTREAL CANADIENS
7. DIEGO MARADONA
6. JESSE (THE BODY) VENTURA
5. GARY PLAYER
4. MARTIN BRODEUR
3. ERIC CARTMAN
2. GAYLORD PERRY
1. TONYA HARDING. “Why? Why? It hurts so much. Why me?” No, that’s not Mike Ribeiro faking an injury — it’s figure skater Nancy Kerrigan after being clubbed in the leg a few weeks before the 1994 Olympics. Kerrigan’s questions were soon answered, when police charged Jeff Gillooly, the husband of rival U.S. skater Tonya Harding, with orchestrating the attack. The ploy worked, as Kerrigan’s injury gave Harding a spot on the U.S. team, but she stumbled to eighth place in Lillehammer. Harding soon put the shame of that incident behind her, replacing it with the shame of a porno tape, several run-ins with the cops and a career as a celebrity boxer.

Basketball legend Auerbach dies

October 30, 2006 by blirio · 6 Comments

“He was certainly one of the most outstanding coaches, general managers and, for that matter, characters that came the NBA’s way,” said Satch Sanders, who played on eight championship teams with the Celtics and later coached them.

“It was his ability to be so far ahead of the game that set him apart. He went after players who could play other parts of game, rebound, defend,” Sanders said. “That put him years ahead of everybody else.” FULL STORY…

Alaska’s Triangle Offense: Dump It or Stay With It?

October 28, 2006 by Bionix · 7 Comments

With Alaska loitering at the bottom of the standings, I was wondering (I wonder a lot), is the Triangle Offense over-rated? You see, this offense delivered nine championships for Phil Jackson’s Lakers and Bulls. Incidentally, it also got Tim Cone a grand slam in 1996 plus a lot of championships in the PBA. But me thinks, the triangle offense is over-rated. Is it time for the Fred Uytengsu franchise to drop the scheme?

Because in the end, you need to have the super players still to take home the championships. Jordan, Pippen, Kobe Bryant and O’Neal for Phil Jackson. Jojo Lastimosa, Johnny Abarrientos and Bong Hawkins (Cariaso too) for Tim Cone. These guys played the Triple-Post offense to perfection resulting in multiple championships for players and coaches mentioned. Read more

Alaska Milk Further Down South

October 28, 2006 by Bionix · 4 Comments

Alaska playing without its lead point guard Mike Cortez suffered another setback sending them further down south in the standings at 1-5. Purefoods Chunkee Giants won its third straight while the Milkmen dropped their fourth. Score was 82-78.

(This could have been easily 80-78 but Pingris decided to impress Danica Sotto even more, so he decided to slam dunk the ball with a second left in the game. Not needed, not required, no implication dunk. Too bad for all those folks who picked 0-8 in the “Ending” game. Pot cash, rice cooker or oven toaster price down the drain.) Read more
